State Hires New Tourism Director; Former Director Takes DED Post(Lincoln, Neb.) Gov. Dave Heineman introduced the Nebraska Department of Economic Development's (DED) selection to replace outgoing Tourism Director Dan Curran, who will head DED's Business Development Division. Christian Hornbaker of Sarpy County, an experienced marketer has been hired to head DED's Division of Travel and Tourism. "Dan has been a dedicated promoter of Nebraska tourism and we are excited about the talents he will bring to his new role with the department," Gov. Heineman said. "We are equally enthusiastic about Christian's knowledge of 21st Century opportunities to lure visitors to the many attractions in our state. Tourism is a vital part of our economic future, and I am confident that he will continue building on the solid foundation of growth in this industry." Hornbaker, a graduate of Papillion-LaVista High School and Northwest Missouri State University with a background in advertising, communications, Internet research, and electronic commerce. Prior to accepting the position as Nebraska's new director of tour and travel, Hornbaker had worked as a sales consultant for MailSouth, Inc., and had previously been an account manager with PayPal. Hornbaker said, "Nebraska has so much to offer travelers. I'm looking forward to building on the successes within the tourism industry and am excited about finding new ways to promote our outstanding products and destinations to travelers." The travel and tourism director oversees the division's activities and administration, including the marketing of Nebraska attractions and events, developing and managing a budget of state and federal revenue sources, monitoring national trends in travel and tourism, assembling and disseminating relevant information to industry representatives, preparing legislation related to tourism, and participating in strategic policy planning.
