Past Showcase Community South Sioux City continues to thrive

LINCOLN, NEB. (April 10, 2006)—Being named the Showcase Community in 2003, hasn’t slowed down South Sioux City (pop. 9,687). The city where “Quality of Life [is] A Cardinal Rule”, is energized and willingly shares its success with other cities, facing similar community and economic development issues.

Little has changed since the hard-charging city was selected for its extensive economic development, intergovernmental, and technology programs—if anything, South Sioux has intensified efforts to instill ongoing pride in residents and ensure that visitors sit up and take notice of the many and varied projects.

“The Nebraska Showcase Award is the most prestigious one given to communities in the state,” said Mayor William McLarty. “We value this award immensely and realize that our efforts are not over, but must continue for our success and that of our great state.”

A $1.5 million Crystal Cove improvement project is on the city’s current drawing board. With help from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, this popular recreational area will undergo major structural renovations to help it better serve the area. Other projects the city has recently pursued include a massive downtown redevelopment program, expanded industrial site control program, the September 2005 dedication of the Lance Hedquist Technology Building, availability of broadband, non-line-of-sight Internet service, and unique intergovernmental partnerships that include passage of a county-wide sales tax to help fund a new jail. South Sioux City also added Nebraska Community Improvement Program awards in 2005 for revitalization of Dakota Avenue, and in 2004 for Siouxland Immigration Leadership Training.

The Showcase Community designation honors one community per year in conjunction with observance of Community Development (CD) Week. It recognizes those communities that have demonstrated exceptional capacity during the past five to 10 years to: identify development goals and strategies, combine local, state and federal resources to achieve those goals, and accomplish major projects that positively impact the community.

Governor Dave Heineman will officially proclaim CD Week in Nebraska, designate the 2006 Showcase Community, and present awards from the cities of Lincoln and Omaha on April 17.
