Gov. Heineman Launches Tourism Campaign; Signs Proclamation for ‘See Nebraska Week’ (Lincoln, Neb.) Gov. Dave Heineman launched a new campaign designed to encourage more Nebraskans to spend time visiting the many sights and attractions in nearby towns and other tourism destinations across the state. The theme of the campaign is ‘More Vacation. Less Travel.’
In recognition of the important role the tour and travel industry plays in local economic development, the Governor signed a proclamation supporting the new campaign by declaring May 13 through 21 as ‘See Nebraska Week’ in the state. “With this campaign, we’re hoping to encourage more Nebraskans and their families to take advantage of travel opportunities through out the state,” Gov. Heineman said. “Whether it’s by reconnecting with our rural roots, attending some of the many festivals and events taking place throughout the summer, or enjoying the beauty of Nebraska’s many landscapes there’s no limit to the possibilities offered in communities of every size across the state.” Travelers in Nebraska spent more money during 2005 than in any previous year, totaling more than $3 billion. Nebraska’s tourism industry provides nearly 44,000 jobs and is the third leading industry in the state. Gov. Heineman said, “Last year we took the first step in investing in this important industry by providing funding for local groups to promote attractions and events taking place in their communities. Grant recipients have spent the past several months preparing for the peak travel season, and we look forward to awarding even more funding in the coming fiscal year.” A survey conducted by AAA designated Nebraska as the least expensive state to travel in for two years running. In 2006, a family of four will spend an estimated $191 a day on travel-related expenses. Christian Hornbaker, director of the Nebraska Division of Travel and Tourism, said, “Nebraska is a state that offers travelers great value for great attractions. With summer comes the opportunity for more Nebraskans to get out and see a new part of the state.” FOR INFORMATION, CONTACT: Aaron Sanderford, Gov’s Office, 402-471-1967 Ashley Cradduck, Gov’s Office, 402-471-1970 Mary Ethel Emanuel, Tourism, 402-471-3797
