Nebraska’s Native American artists encouraged to apply for art exhibit

LINCOLN, NEB. (May 22, 2006)—Native American artists who are enrolled members of the federally-recognized Winnebago, Omaha, Santee Sioux and Northern Ponca tribes in Nebraska with offices in the state, and the Otoe-Missouria tribe in Oklahoma are encouraged to apply for spots in an upcoming juried art show sponsored by the Nebraska Lewis and Clark Bicentennial Commission. Approximately 30 works of art will be displayed, September 8 through 22 at the Nebraska Arts Council Showcase Gallery, 1004 Farnam St. The show is one of several events planned in Omaha to commemorate the return trip of the Lewis and Clark Expedition.

The Lewis and Clark Expedition met with the Otoe-Missouria tribe in 1804 near the site of present-day Fort Atkinson State Historical Park. This meeting marked the first official council between the Expedition and native people.

Ten Native American artists and vendors also are being sought for an Outdoor Art Fair on Saturday, September 9, in downtown Omaha.
