The
Terry & Hazeldeane Carpenter Intergenerational Center is located in
Terrytown, Nebraska and sits on eleven acres of land. This
multi-purpose community center was built in 1996 and includes a
building with 20,000 square feet. Located on its grounds are a 2/5 mile
walking path, two sand volleyball courts, a soccer field, two softball
fields (one with lights), bleachers and a snack shack with restrooms.
The Center offers a variety of programs and services to residents of
Scotts Bluff County. The Carpenter Children's Center is licensed for 80
children ages 18 months to 12 years and is located on the North side of
the building. Transportation to and from school is available for any
child enrolled in day care. The Terrytown Head Start program is also
located in the Center. One full-time teacher and two aides facilitate
this program, while 14 students attend during the traditional school
year.

Valley
Alternative Transitional School (VALTS) is an alternative high school
with students from three school districts. Educational Service Unit #13
directs this program. Two full-time teachers and one full-time
administrator work with approximately 40 students during the
traditional school year. The on-site computer lab is also used by the
VALTS students and is available to the public for adult night classes.
A total of 18 Dell and Compaq computers are networked together with
internet access.
A food service area is also used daily to prepare breakfast, lunch, and
snacks for children in daycare and Head Start. The spacious lobby area
includes high ceilings with numerous windows. This area also includes
restrooms, a counter that is attached to the kitchen and the
administrative office for the Village of Terrytown, as well as the
administrative office for the Center. An 8,000 square feet gym with a
seating capacity of 250 is used for indoor recreation, junior high
volleyball and basketball practices, games and tournaments. The
Center's daycare and Head Start children also use the gym frequently.

The
fitness buff also has a place to workout during the week. A 4,000
square feet fitness center, complete with weight machines, Olympic
weights, treadmills, exercise bikes, and Eliptix machines is open to
the public for a membership fee. Locker rooms equipped with showers are
available for both men and women. During the summer months, local
junior high and high school teams use the softball diamonds. A church
sand volleyball league also enjoys using the facilities.
In the fall, softball diamonds are in full use, as Gering High School
conducts all of its practices and home games at the Center. A junior
tackle football league is very popular with participants from third to
sixth grade. During its first year of operation, the fifth and sixth
grade junior tackle league drew 100 players and 20 volunteer coaches.
The year 2001 will be the first for a third and fourth grade league.
Both leagues are expected to draw a minimum of 100 players each. All
games are played on Saturday morning on the Center fields.

The
Nebraska Department of Economic Development helped to build the
multipurpose facility that consists of meeting rooms and a community
center. Through this construction, DED enabled Terrytown to expand and
develop the Intergenerational Center. Today the Center serves people of
all ages from the city of Terrytown and many surrounding communities.
