The current focus of Process Improvement activity within the MEP system is on Lean Manufacturing and Lean Enterprise services. Nebraska MEP particpates in offering Lean training and implementation services as part of the national MEP network.

Lean Enterprise services link describes Nebraska MEP center-sponsored service offerings. How does Lean differ from traditional manufacturing?

While traditional manufacturing philosophies stress high utilization of machinery and manpower with little concern for cycle time or manufacturing waste, the Lean Manufacturing production philosophy focuses on creating greater production efficiencies through maximizing value-added activities, while minimizing waste. While traditional U.S. manufacturing is rooted in "Just-In-Case" (JIC) philosophies, Lean Manufacturing is evolved from "Just-In-Time" (JIT) principles.

What are the benefits of implementing Lean? Virtually any manufacturer can benefit from Lean initiatives. Typical benefits to those manufacturers who embrace lean manufacturing systems and concepts include:

Productivity improvements of 10-30%

Up to 90% reduction in work-in-progress 50% increase of space utilization

85% improved quality

Up to 90% reduction in lead times

What do I need to learn to become Lean? The NIST Manufacturing Extension Partnership offers a full slate of Lean Manufacturing courses, many through MEP University.

Additionally, MEP is currently developing new Lean implementation courses that will soon be available!

MEP can help you implement a Lean Enterprise. We¹ll support your objectives by effectively utilizing all resources, while minimizing capital investment and providing for employee safety and satisfaction.
