Visit Nebraska Week is May 12-20
LINCOLN, NEB. (May 7, 2007)—Nebraska history is full of some of the most talented writers in the world; many of these writers’ hometowns are some of the state’s most important tourist attractions.
Visit Nebraska Week, May 12-20, is the perfect time to educate Nebraskans about the state’s famous authors and the importance of state tourism. Local bookstores, libraries and educators are encouraged to create a reading list of Nebraska authors, or set up a display of Nebraska books during the week.
Authors who could be featured include Willa Cather, John G. Neihardt, Richard Dooling, John Janovy, Weldon Kees, William Kloefkorn, Ted Kooser and Mari Sandoz, among others. Photography by Joel Sartore or Michael Forsberg featuring scenes of beauty from around the state could accompany the books, and particularly creative displays could even include DVDs of films by Omaha native Alexander Payne.
Incorporating historic or new state maps in displays and books about important historic events, such as the Lewis and Clark Expedition or the History of Union Pacific Railroad in the display or list, would make the project even more educational.
Visit Nebraska Week gives state residents and visitors the opportunity to explore what the state has to offer and to gain a better understanding of the importance of tourism: It’s a major U.S. industry and also contributes to the country’s cultural and social fabric. The week takes place at the same time as National Tourism Week, an annual event organized by the Travel Industry of America.
