LINCOLN, NEB. (August 15, 2005)–Jane Smith of Brownville, Neb., has been named to the nine-member Nebraska Tourism Advisory Committee. She replaces outgoing member Kim Francis.
The Committee meets quarterly with the Nebraska Department of Economic Development’s Travel and Tourism Division staff to offer input and suggestions about tourism marketing and programs.
Smith has actively promoted Brownville for decades. In the 1970s, she organized the Brownville Old-time Fiddler’s Contest. She and her husband, Randall, own and operate the Spirit of Brownville Riverboat. She also has been involved for several years with the Brownville Village Theatre.
Due to Smith’s tireless promotion, Brownville was designated as a Book Town USA by Richard Booth of Hay-on-Wye, Wales. Her latest project is the soon-to-be opened Lyceum, a huge used bookstore that will include a visitors center, reading room, and cafe. The Lyceum was funded in part by a Tourism Development Initiative grant through federal funds administered by the Nebraska Department of Economic Development.
