LINCOLN, NEB. (February 1, 2008)—The Nebraska Department of Economic Development has awarded $40,000 in Nebraska Affordable Housing Trust Funds through its 2008 Nebraska Affordable Housing Program to the ISANTI Community Resident Organization to develop a long-term strategy that addresses affordable housing needs on the Santee Sioux Indian Reservation. The Reservation is located in Knox County near the Nebraska-South Dakota border.
The 501 c (3) ISANTI Community Resident Organization will create a program that develops affordable housing and provides for job training for its young members. Approximately 95 percent of the Reservation’s population is low income with a relatively high number being young high school dropouts or currently unemployed individuals. The Reservation’s major employers include the Ohiya Casino, Tribal Administration and the Tribal Housing Authority.
ISANTI Community Resident Organization provides its clients with previously unavailable services including homeownership opportunities, substance abuse programs, and quality homes.
Lila Mechaley at ISANTI Community Resident Organization administers the project. She can be reached at 402-857-2656, or email:
