The community has developed a strategic action plan; rehabilitated 60-plus homes; provided 24 businesses with loan, start-up, and down payment assistance; relocated a business from Pennsylvania; and earned the Nebraska Community Improvement Program’s coveted Otto Hoiberg Award in 2004 and 2006; among many achievements too numerous to mention.
The 2007 Governor’s Showcase Community designation, administered by the Nebraska Department of Economic Development (DED), further ignited Bassett citizen’s determination to improve their quality of life.
“It’s hard to put into words the impact it had on our community,” said Debbie Seberger, economic development coordinator, for the Bassett Economic Development Agency. “The pride motivated our volunteers to get even more involved and the Community Showcase Award helped them realize the importance of their efforts. When we won the Otto Hoiberg Award this past November, it was said we are the “Little Town that Can.” That phrase is a good description of our community.”

. DED will accept nominations through February 20.
Governor Dave Heineman will present the award on March 25 in conjunction with National Community Development Week, March 24-30, which spotlights communities that demonstrate an exceptional capacity to identify development goals and strategies; combine local, state and federal resources to achieve those goals; and during the past five to ten years, have accomplished positive, high-impact projects.
The National Community Development Association initiated National Community Development Week in 1986 to remind Congress of the importance of the Community Development Block Grant program.
