Four of every 10 women want a romantic getaway

LINCOLN, NEB. (February 13, 2008)— It’s February 13: Definitely last minute when it comes to your Valentine. This year, don’t be predictable with flowers, jewelry or candy. Give a getaway.

A stay at a hotel or a bed and breakfast is an even more popular Valentine’s Day gift than flowers or jewelry, according to survey results released by the Travel Industry of America.

A research firm surveyed more than 1,000 women across the country to find out what they wanted for the annual holiday, assuming all the options cost about the same. A romantic getaway topped the list, with four in 10, or 36 percent, of women reporting they would most prefer an overnight stay in a hotel or a bed and breakfast.

Dinner at a restaurant ranked second, preferred by one third of women. Only two women in 10 preferred jewelry. Flowers (8 percent) and lingerie (2 percent) made the bottom of the list.

“A surprise romantic getaway is something on the top of many people’s gift lists,” said Sarah Baker, DED’s tourism public relations director. “Spending time away from home is an unexpected treat even without a special occasion, and Nebraska has lots of options for couples to get away, relax and rejuvenate.”
