LINCOLN, NEB. (March 25, 2008)—The city of Mitchell has received $13,000 in Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funding to update its comprehensive plan and zoning ordinances. The award constitutes the Nebraska Department of Economic Development’s third funding cycle for 2007.
The city will contribute $4,000 to the project.
Located along Nebraska Highway 26 in Scotts Bluff County in the Panhandle region, Mitchell primarily serves as a bedroom community for the cities of Scottsbluff and Gering, just 10 miles west. Many Mitchell residents work for the railroad, or at jobs in Scottsbluff-Gering, Morrill and Lyman.
Providing affordable quality housing is imperative to the city’s goal to continue attracting new residents. During the past three years, Mitchell has made 12 building lots along the city golf course available for housing development. City officials also are working to develop low-income and moderate-income rental units.
Limited resources led Mitchell and the communities of Morrill, Lyman and Henry to develop an interlocal government agreement to share staff, equipment, and other resources, as well as conduct a feasibility study to determine if the four communities could also share a single water source.
Together Mitchell, Lyman and Morrill contributed to a housing rehabilitation program that led to the rehabilitation of nine low-income homes throughout the communities.
The city also has worked to improve its overall appearance through downtown landscaping and resurfacing gravel streets with cement paving, curbs and gutters.
