LINCOLN, NEB. (July 18, 2008)-Wahoo has earned the Nebraska Economic Development Certified Community designation.
Sponsored by the Nebraska Diplomats, the program is one of a few nationwide that recognizes communities for being prepared for economic development. The Nebraska Department of Economic Development administers the application process.
"Our communities are really embracing the true value of becoming ED certified...how it can help them prepare to meet future development challenges and position them for new or expanding businesses and industry opportunities," said Nebraska Diplomats President Tim White.
Wahoo is proud of its progressive spirit and strong leadership. A recent addition is the new Saunders Medical Center, completed in 2007, which provides a full range of services. In 2006, a new library and new aquatic park were completed in the community providing entertainment and fun for all ages. A new law enforcement center is slated for completion in spring 2009. Some projects were completed in partnership with Saunders County.
Unique to Wahoo is that it is the hometown of Governor Dave Heineman, a Wahoo graduate, and for a time, served as the home office of the Late Show with David Letterman. The community also was home to the "Five Famous Sons"- Nobel Prize winning geneticist George Beadle, Academy Award winning producer, writer, actor and director Daryl Zanuck, Hall of Fame baseball player Sam Crawford, Pulitzer Prize winning composer Howard Hanson and famous artist/illustrator Clarence Anderson.
Wahoo now joins the list of other Nebraska ED Certified Communities that includes Auburn, Cozad, Fremont, Geneva, Gothenburg, Grand Island, Holdrege, Kearney, Lexington, Nebraska City, Norfolk, North Platte, Ogallala, Ord, Scottsbluff, Sidney, South Sioux City, and Wayne.
