Improve Neighborhoods PDF Print E-mail

Neighborhood is defined in as many different ways as the number and characteristics of people who live in them. Apartment renters, condo or townhouse dwellers, and homeowners of every conceivable style, model and year of houses built have their own reasons for living where they do. These may include green space or no yard work, the convenience of nearby grocery stores, churches, or medical centers, similar (or greater diversity of) interests and ages, and the desire to connect socially, among other reasons. One shared commonality all neighborhoods have is every family’s, couple’s or individual’s need for permanent shelter. The department has programs to help meet communities’ needs for new or rehabilitated housing and refurbishing neighborhoods.

Housing Programs
The Nebraska Affordable Housing Program awards grants directly to nonprofit organizations, local governments and public housing authorities, which in turn builds rental units and new single family housing (including infrastructure) for homeownership, rehabilitates existing rental properties, purchases and rehabilitates homes, adapts buildings, such as old schools or hotels for rental housing, and administers programs to help homeowners rehabilitate homes or purchase their first homes. The awards are made through the Nebraska Affordable Housing Trust Fund, and federally-funded Community Development Block Grant and HOME programs. Click here for more information.

Community Development Block Grants
The federally-funded Community Development Block Grant program helps communities realize the need for new and rehabilitated housing as it relates to expanding workforces resulting from new companies moving in and existing companies expanding operations, specialized housing for aging residents, more affordable housing for lower and middle income families, couples and individuals, and other issues.
