JUNE 29, 2012 (LINCOLN, NEB.)—The Nebraska Department of Economic Development has awarded $79,791 HOME set aside funds to West Central Nebraska Development District, a nonprofit 501(c)(3) in Ogallala. West Central Nebraska Development District (WCNDD) will conduct an Owner-Occupied Rehabilitation (OOR) program involving three homes in Ogallala whose occupants earn at or below 80 percent of the Area Median Family Income.
Qualifying homeowners will receive grants and loans up to $20,363 per home to undertake housing repairs that may include the reduction of lead-based paint hazard. Applicants also will be required to apply for any initial available funding through the U.S. Department of Agriculture Rural Development before receiving assistance through the OOR program.
Located along the I-80 corridor in Keith County, Ogallala (pop. 4,737) has 2,495 homes, of which 531 are more than 70-years-old, and 1,491 were built before 1970.
In 2010, Ogallala completed an OOR project involving 15 homes. This program also was administered by WCNDD. During that application process, WCNDD received more than 35 application and inquiries from potential income-eligible applicants, and currently averages 2-3 phone inquiries per months from residents with housing rehab needs.
